Minorities should be protected by the majority, RMDSZ says

“A Romanian-Hungarian conflict similar to the Black Spring of 1990 was only avoided by a hair’s breadth”- Attila Korodi, faction leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) faction in the Romanian House of Representatives said on Tuesday during the motion of censure debate against the Government, referring to the incident that happened in the Úz Valley military graveyard, on the 6th June.

“Democracy failed on that day.” -he said.

Attila Korodi emphasized that only the National Construction Authority reacted with the necessary firmness to the illegitimacy committed by the Dărmănești (Dormánfalva in Hungarian) council -although RMDSZ reported it on time to other authorities as well -, while the other state institutions overlooked the irregularities.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Gendarmerie and the Prefects of Hargita/Harghita and Bákó/ Bacău Counties are responsible for the 6th June events, as they let the emotions run high, and by this made it possible for the outnumbered and fanaticized, – partly inebriated –  Romanian vandals to attack the peacefully praying Hungarians who were protesting against the illegitimacy-, and to damage Hungarian soldiers’ graves”,  Korodi said.

According to the RMDSZ representative, in a real democracy the burden of defending minorities falls on the majority, and minorities should not be the ones that are forced to defend themselves from the majority.

The motion of censure – although supported by the RMDSZ, failed to garner a majority of votes, meaning that Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă’s cabinet survived its second such act.
