According to a recent communiqué posted on the Facebook page of the Consulate General of Hungary in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), people can travel from Romania to Hungary without mandatory home quarantine if they have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine in Romania and can present a document proving this. The provision applies to Hungarian and Romanian nationals as well as those with dual citizenship. The document issued in Romania proving inoculation, the immunity certificate, contains information in both Romanian and English.
Furthermore, people who can present a PCR test proving that they have had the coronavirus infection in the past six months can cross the Romanian-Hungarian border without any quarantine obligations. Children under the age of 18, whose parents are in one of the above-mentioned categories, can also travel from Romania to Hungary with a Hungarian identity card, Hungarian passport or Romanian travel documents.
Neither a negative PCR test, rapid coronavirus test or antigen test are being accepted for entering Hungary without the obligation of home quarantine. It is, however, still possible to travel freely if you remain within the limited border area, as anyone can enter the territory of Hungary from Romania if they only travel for a maximum distance of 30 kilometers and spend a maximum of 24 hours in Hungary.
For people traveling from Hungary to Romania, there is no quarantine required, nor do they have to present any coronavirus test or proof of vaccination. People who have been vaccinated in Hungary can enter Hungary with the (plastic) immunity card they received.
It is very important to know that in Hungary a number of services are available only if one is in possession of a Hungarian immunity card: for instance, booking paid accommodation; dining in restaurant interiors; and visiting theaters, cinemas, zoos, museums and sporting events.
All Hungarian citizens can apply for the Hungarian immunity card; the request can be submitted in person at the so-called Hungarian government “windows” or through an electronic Customer Portal, the Hungarian Consulate General says on Facebook. The card is issued 15 days after the application is submitted.
Hungarian citizens who have a valid electronic identity card with a corresponding active PIN code can initiate their Customer Portal individually.
The employees of the Hungarian Consulate General in Kolozsvár will assist those Hungarian citizens who do not possess a valid Hungarian electronic ID to establish a Customer Portal and request the immunity card. The process is free, and it is not necessary to register in advance by phone at the Consulate, says the communiqué. Citizens must have a working e-mail address, a telephone number, a Hungary-issued address card and a photo ID on them when applying with the help of the Consulate’s staff. Furthermore, applying for a Hungarian immunity card is free of charge. The application must be accompanied by an official vaccination certificate issued in Romania, which contains the type, date and place of vaccination.
