Takeaways: Voter turnout up among ethnic Hungarians; Kelemen sweeps

A quick analysis of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) showed that in the predominantly ethnic Hungarian regions of Romania, nine out of ten Hungarians voted for RMDSZ president Hunor Kelemen, while nationally he got just over 76 percent of the Hungarian votes.

Following an intensive campaign, Hungarian voter turnout was higher than in the 2009 and 2014 elections, with about 460,000 ethnic Hungarians casting their votes. Kelemen won 3.95 percent of the overall vote, which was higher than his result in 2009 and 2014.

Hungarian participation at presidential elections has regularly been lower than that of the general population because the Hungarian candidacy is more about raising awareness of issues than it is about any chance of finishing at the top.

Iohannis will face off against Dăncilă in a second round on November 24 and RMDSZ will announce on Wednesday the decision of the party’s permanent council on whom it will support.
