County subsidizes airlines flying to Marosvásárhely

Maros/Mureș County Council would provide EUR 800,000 financial support for airlines offering routes to Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș. The County Council’s goal is to increase the number of tourists arriving to Marosvásárhely.

Transylvania International Airport Director András Peti told to szekelyhon.ro that by using public money for this purpose they would like to boost the tourism in the county .

The plan first has to be presented to the European Commission and after its approval the implementation can be started by announcing different tenders and public procurement procedures. The Maros County Council intends to submit two EU tenders for the development of the airport. According to the Airport Director,

  • the aim of one of the tenders is the enlargement of the passenger terminal,
  • while with the help of the other one, they would like to enlarge both the fire-station and passenger service area.

Because of the appearance of the new variant of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom, three days before Christmas the National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) suspended all flights to Romania from the UK, and so the London-Luton flight to the Transylvania Airport is also suspended until January 4.

The flight between the Hungarian capital of Budapest and Marosvásárhely is also not operating yet and according to Wizz Air’s schedule, it will restart only in February. On the other hand, flights to Dortmund and Memmingen-Munich do operate, and passengers arriving from these destinations do not have to go to a two-week-long quarantine.
