Cardiology center to be set up in Csíkszereda with Hungarian support

An interventional cardiology center is to be set up in Csíkszereda (Miercurea-Ciuc) with the financial support of the Hungarian state within the framework of the Hargita County Emergency Hospital, the transindex.ro news portal reported. The hospital development was announced by the Mens Sana Foundation on Saturday, in a statement published by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (known by its Hungarian acronym of RMDSZ).

The press release quotes Judit Konrád, manager of the Hargita County Emergency Hospital based in Csíkszereda, who underlined that the hospital has been preparing to develop its cardiology department for years. Doctors have been or are just now in training to be able to provide interventional cardiology care for patients locally; this way, someone who has had a heart attack will not have to travel for hours to an intervention center located in a distant city. Each year, around 600 patients in need of urgent interventional cardiology care are sent from Csíkszereda to university centers in the country, István Csaba Balogh, the chief of the cardiology department said.

“In terms of human resources, we are all set to work; one of the cardiologists has already completed the targeted training in the procedures for implantable devices, and two other doctors are just now participating at a training course for coronary interventions and will graduate in May,” the chief cardiologist detailed. The specific medical equipment will be the property of the Mens Sana Foundation, acting as an intermediary organization between the Hungarian government and the hospital.

“The Hungarian government has provided financial support to equip an interventional cardiology center in Szeklerland thanks to the intercession of RMDSZ President Hunor Kelemen,” RMDSZ pointed out in the press release. “This center will be of great importance to the populations of the Csík region, Hargita County, and all of Szeklerland: Soon, patients will be able to benefit from life-saving cardiology procedures close to their homes,” noted RMDSZ in the statement.

The Hargita County Emergency Hospital is maintained by the county administration. The Mens Sana Foundation is a foundation belonging to the Roman Catholic Parish named after the Holy Cross in Csíkszereda and the Roman Catholic Parish in the village of Csíkkarcfalva (Cârţa). The foundation became known as the operator of the Szeklerland Hockey Academy (Székelyföldi Jégkorong Akadémia in Hungarian). The president of the Mens Sana Foundation is RMDSZ Senator Barna Tánczos, who was appointed Romanian Minister of the Environment in December.
