Marosvásárhely Uni to launch Hungarian-language IT studies

Rector of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș , Leonard Azamfirei would launch a Hungarian language IT program in the institution.

According to local news portal, zi-de-zi.ro; on Tuesday the rector had a meeting with those university teachers, who used to teach at the Petru Maior University, before its integration into the Marosvásárhely Medicine and Pharmacy University (MOGYE) last year. After getting informed about how many of them speak Hungarian, he initiated to start IT training at the university in Hungarian.

“All of us are part of a multicultural university, which fulfills its mission -even after the institution integration-, and which continues providing ample scope for any constructive initiatives.”-he said, and also mentioned that they would satisfy the huge demand of the labor market with the planned Hungarian IT program.

The other side of the coin

It all sounds very nice, but let’s see the other side of the coin. Leader of the University’s Hungarian Department, Prof. Béla Szabó – who was only informed about Leonard Azamfirei’s initiative from the Hungarian News Agency’s (MTI) reporter – said that the rector wants to start a Hungarian IT program instead of solving the long existing problem of the Hungarian medical and pharmaceutical training. The Hungarian-language IT training is already working well in Transylvania at other two Universities – at the Hungarian Department of the Sapientia Transylvanian Hungarian Science University in Marosvásárhely, and in the Babeș–Bolyai Science University in Kolozsvár/Cluj-Napoca- while the Hungarian medical and pharmaceutical training is still not assured yet.

Szabó added that last year when the two universities merged, the rector put into perspective the launch of the Hungarian-language medical training, but this still hasn’t happened yet. Moreover – according to him – , the situation of the Hungarian Department in general hasn’t improved either at the University during this period. The Hungarian pre-clinic department, – initiated by Prof. Szabó – hasn’t been established yet, and because of this the Hungarian-language education is still vulnerable to the will of the Romanian majority.

In order to provide self-sufficiency to the Hungarian medical and pharmaceutical education, the representatives of the Hungarian Department feel necessary to establish an independent Hungarian faculty or at least three separate Hungarian main departments.

The conflict at the Marosvásárhely Medicine and Pharmacy University started some eight years ago – in 2011 -, but the topic of the Hungarian language medical and pharmaceutical education is still not solved yet.
