Romania’s pro-European parties have defeated the ruling Social Democrats (PSD) in the European Parliament election held on Sunday (May 26), the preliminary results show. The RMDSZ managed to surpass the critical 5% threshold, obtaining votes in four counties, according to data provided by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC).
According to the data released this afternoon (3 p.m. EEST), the National Liberal Party (PNL) obtained 26.95% of the votes in the elections to the European Parliament, compared to PSD’s 23.44%. In third place we find the Save Romania Union (USR) PLUS Alliance with 20.08%, followed by PRO Romania with 6.74%, and the RMDSZ with 6.62%, PMP with 5.42%.
The USR PLUS was the clear winner in the diaspora votes. Long queues formed in major European cities, and Romanian citizens waited for long hours to be able to vote. Some even missed out on getting inside their voting section because their government had failed to provide sufficient voting booths, stamps, and staff there, causing ire among the voters who had waited long hours outdoors in the rain to vote.
In Transylvania, the RMDSZ obtained the majority of votes in four counties: Maros/Mures, Hargita/Harghita, Kovászna/Covasna, and Szatmár/Satu Mare. The highest number – 103,359 votes – the RMDSZ received in Harghita County, followed by Maros/Mures County with 75,539 votes, while 51,817 Kovászna/Covasna-based voters and 41,390 voters in Szatmár/Satu Mare county trusted the RMDSZ to represent their values in the European Parliament for the next five years.
Out of the 32 seats allocated to Romania, RMDSZ will again have two representatives in Brussels.
