The Temesvár/Timișoara municipality approved at an emergency meeting of the local assembly on August 11 to launch a feasibility study on building a new stadium on the outskirts of the city with a capacity of 15,160 seats of which 588 VIP seats and 102 boxes.
The planned new stadium will have an area of 10,605 square meters (114151 sq feet), a concrete foundation and a metal structure, with a roof made of composite materials and a parking lot for 700 cars. The planned cost of the stadium is just over RON 113 million (EUR 23 million).
The city with a population of over 300,000 currently does not have a large-capacity stadium as the previous one, the Dan Păltinişanu stadium with a capacity of 30,000, built in 1965 fell into disrepair and was considered hazardous.
This will be the second new stadium of the city, since in January the city approved the feasability study for the construction of a new, 30,000-seat stadium on the site of the old Dan Păltinişanu stadium at a cost of EUR 50 million.
Whether the announcement has any connection with the approaching local elections is anybody’s guess but those elections are just over a month away, scheduled for September 27.
