On their Wednesday video conference call, representatives of the Romanian Professional Football League (LPF) and leaders of the fourteen first-league clubs discussed the possibility of completing the rest of the season abroad in case they aren’t allowed to do so in Romania.
The clubs were unanimous in supporting the initiative of the LPF. According to the plan, following the restart of normal training,
the teams would gather in a neutral location – Antalya, Turkey – for a three-week-long training camp, after which they would play out the remainder of the season behind closed doors.
The clubs’ expenses would also be lower because they wouldn’t need to travel to the different matches. Moreover, they would have their own training center during both the training session and the championship.
This scenario would only be implemented if football matches are still not allowed in Romania after the 6th of June – the earliest date the championship could restart, as agreed upon by the LPF, first-league club leaders and representatives of the Romanian Football Unions (AFAN).
However, President Klaus Iohannis announced on Wednesday (April 22) that after the state of emergency ends on May 15, restrictions on individual travel will not be extended. So it is possible that teams will be able to start their training program here at home and the championship will be able to take place on the planned date and on Romanian soil.
