The standing committee of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) decided at its meeting on Wednesday not to support any of the two remaining candidates — neither President Iohannis nor former Prime Minister Dăncilă — in the second round of the presidential election, said RMDSZ President Hunor Kelemen at a press conference following the meeting.
“In the three days that have passed since the election, we (the RMDSZ) haven’t received any request for endorsement, thus we have decided not to endorse any of the candidates,” Kelemen said in a live broadcast on Facebook. “We trust that our voters will have the common sense to vote for who they think is the best choice,” he said, “and we encourage them to vote and make their opinion matter.”
Romania’s current president, Klaus Iohannis will face off against the recently deposed former Social-Democrat prime minister, Viorica Dăncilă, in a second round on November 24.
In the first round, Iohannis received 37.49 percent of votes, while Dăncilă came in second with 22.69 percent, both far ahead of the other twelve candidates.
Kelemen received 3.95 percent of the votes. He noted previously that this was a good result, considering that he received more votes than in the previous 2014 presidential election and also taking into account the fact that Romania’s ethnic Hungarian minority does not consider the country’s presidential elections to have a direct impact on either general policies or ethnic ones.
