Romanian chainsaw killer gets life sentence

The Romanian chainsaw killer who beheaded a man in front of his children  will remain behind bars for the rest of his life, and he must also pay hundreds of thousands of euros in damages to the victim’s family. The ruling is final, reports Romanian news portal Tion.

After reviewing the case, the Temesvár/Timisoara Court of Appeals decided to change the sentence of the chainsaw killer to the maximum allowed by law: Doru Sebastian Muntean was sentenced to life imprisonment, a major change over the original 25-year sentence. In addition, he has to pay RON 5,000 (~EUR 1,050) in material damages and EUR 320,000 in moral damages to the victim’s family.

The murder, which could easily be part of a horror movie, happened in Szentandrás/Sânandrei during the night of January 30, 2019. The Arad-based Muntean bought a car from the victim some time before the killing, and they had a fight because the latter didn’t want to return the money. Blinded by hatred and a morbid thirst for revenge, and fueled by the desire to recoup his money, Muntean acted like the villains of the now trendy action movies you see on television. He took a chainsaw and broke into the house of the victim in Szentandrás/Sânandrei while he was sleeping with his two children, and beheaded him.

The police officers found him walking the streets covered in blood shortly after he had brutally killed the victim. He was charged with murder, cruelty, destruction, trespassing and other violent actions.
