Flight W6 3652 of Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air from London Luton to Iași in north-eastern Romania aborted its landing there and was diverted to the country’s capital, Bucharest after flight crew suspected a malfunction of the air brakes (also known as flaps), news portal Origo reported.
The flight was on approach to runway 14 of the Iași airport when the flight crew reported a flap problem. The aircraft – an Airbus A320-200 – climbed back to travel altitude and was redirected to the Bucharest Otopeni airport where it landed on runway 08L with its flaps up at a higher-than-normal speed of 150 knots (278 km/h), the Aviation Herald reported.
The flight – with a crew of six and 169 passengers aboard – diverted to Bucharest because the Otopeni runway is twice as long (2,800 m versus 1,400 m) as the one in Iași. This meant an additional distance of six hundred kilometres. No one was injured during the incident.
Airline Wizz Air apologized to passengers in a press release, adding that the passengers were transported to their original destination by bus.
