Romanians are not interested in the EP Elections

Only one of four people from Romania would vote at this year’s European Parliament elections, shows a poll conducted between January 21 and February 5 by social studies institute INSCOP.

The willingness to vote at the May EP elections was measured on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 meant not going to vote, and 10 being would vote for certain. 11,7% of the respondents were certain they were not going to vote, and only 26,1% said they will participate. In comparison to November 2018, the number of persons who are sure that they will not participate at the elections decreased by 2,9%.

To the question If the elections would be next Saturday who would you vote for from the following parties? 29,9% answered that haven’t decided yet, and 11,7% declared that they won’t vote, 4,1% were unable to answer to the question.

Among the 54,5% Romanians who declared their party preferences, most (27.8%) would opt for the Social Democrat Party (PSD), followed by the National Liberal Party (PNL) with 26,7%, the Save Romania Union (USR) 10% and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) 9,2%. The Freedom, Unity and Solidarity Party (PLUS), the new party of former Social Democrat Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș would gain 7% of the votes. The poll was conducted before the 2020 USR-PLUS Alliance for EP elections was born.

According to the poll the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) and the Pro Romania Party would also cross the election threshold, the Pro Romania Party would gain 6,6 percent, the RMDSZ 5,1 percent of the votes.

Since November of 2018 only PNL’s voter based has increased, the other parties voter bases haven’t changed significantly.
