An MP of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) introduced a draft to the lower house of the Romanian parliament to introduce the teaching of “media education and culture” in secondary schools with the primary aim to teach pupils how to discern real from fake information online, news portal Ziare.com writes.
“…the capacity for critical, independent judgement of received information is not a specialty subject for those interested in communications and social sciences, but a fundamental challenge for all youth”, MP Ovidiu Raetchi said in the reasoning of the proposal. The subject is supposed to be taught in classes 6 and nine of the secondary education system and the Ministry of Education should ensure the proper and up-to-date training of teachers.
The center-right PNL is the second largest political party in Romania behind the ruling Social-Democrats (PSD).
