Former Prime Minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu launched his bid for general mayor of Bucharest with a resounding electoral program entitled “From Little Paris to the Great Bucharest”, promising, if not exactly the moon and the stars, but very close.
The former Prime Minister promises free public transportation and heating in apartments and to demolish the fences around Parliament and Cotroceni Palace. He also says he will place the Column of Trajan in Victory Square.
The Column of Trajan is the archetype of Roman triumphal columns, erected by Emperor Trajan at the beginning of the second century, commemorating his victorious wars in Dacia, whose territory was that of current Romania and Moldova, overlapping into Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. It is located in Trajan’s Forum in Rome.
“Secondly, the re-development of Victory Square, where the Government seat is located, by bringing an important monument of identity and history of the Romanian nation – placing of the Column of Trajan in Victory Square. It is a project made by urbanists, a superb project that places the Column of Traian right in the visual axis that goes along Kiseleff Boulevard from the Arch of Triumph,” Tăriceanu promises.
Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu is a Romanian politician who was Prime Minister of Romania from December 29, 2004, to December 22, 2008. He was also president of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and vice-president of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR), two positions he assumed in 2004. He was also the President of the Senate, the second-highest position in the Romanian State, from March 10, 2014, until he resigned on September 2, 2019. In July 2014, he established the Liberal Reformist Party.
Romania will hold municipal elections on September 27.
