Five years after talks began, the Barót/Baraolt Fire Department has been officially inaugurated, significantly reducing the time needed for firefighters to arrive at the scene of local fires. The fire department was built in the courtyard of the Barót city hospital in collaboration with the Kovászna/Covasna County Council and local councils of Erdővidék.
More than 25,000 people live in the area, and before the Barót fire department existed, firefighters had to rush to the scene from Sepsiszentgyörgy/Sfântu Gheorghe, losing serious time. Now, the firefighters serving in Barót can arrive within a maximum of 10-15 minutes, as they cover the Erdővidék area, including settlements such as Barót/Baraolt, Nagyajta/Aita Mare, Nagybacon/Băţanii Mari, Bölön/Belin, Bardoc/Brăduţ and Vargyas/Vârghiş.
The aforementioned settlements – along with the Kovászna County Council – signed an agreement five years ago with the Kovászna County Environmental Inspectorate to establish a fire department in Barót.
“For us, the safety of inhabitants is the top priority, so establishing a fire department here was key. It was possible to build the fire service because we joined forces with Erdővidék’s local authorities,” Sándor Tamás, president of Kovászna County Council, said at the inauguration event.
From a disaster management point of view, the new fire brigade is a turning point in the life of Erdővidék, said Barna Lázár Kiss, mayor of Barót, who was pleased to see the completion of the project initiated five years ago.
