Tuesday night, in a one-off occasion to alleviate the long queues of Romanian and Bulgarian guest workers at the border with Austria, Hungary opened a humanitarian corridor to allow the workers to return home. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had announced in Parliament on Monday that starting on Tuesday, Hungary would close its borders to private traffic, allowing only Hungarian citizens to enter. This had left hundreds of Romanian and Bulgarian citizens stuck in Austria. But last night, entry was allowed for a limited time.
The Romanians were escorted to the Nagylak (Nadlac) border crossing point by the Hungarian police and arrived to the border around 3:00 a.m. All those seeking entrance were carefully checked by epidemiologists and had to fill out a declaration as to where they were coming from. Those coming from yellow zones then returned home, where they will spend 14 days in isolation; those who arrived from red zones were escorted to quarantine centers. All were escorted by police to their given destination after being checked.
Most of the people returning were seasonal workers who had lost their jobs due the coronavirus and were not able to find any other work.

În ultimele ore, polițiștii de frontieră au fost efectuate formalitățile de intrare în ţară pentru 2.500 persoane şi aproximativ 700 de autovehicule.Ulterior efectuării controlului specific la intrarea în țară, persoanele au fost preluate de către reprezentanții Direcției de Sănătate Publică pentru completarea declaraţiei pe proprie răspundere și efectuarea controlului epidemiologic.După încheierea formalităților și stabilirea măsurile dispuse de către personalul medical aflat în punct, mașinile au fost preluate de către echipaje de poliţie şi jandarmi pentru a fi conduse spre locațiile stabilite pentru carantinare sau pentru autoizolare.Poliția de Frontieră a triplat efectivele implicate în controlul de frontieră astfel încât formalitățile să se desfășoare cu operativitate. On Wednesday, the Romanian Strategic Communications group said that on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning approximately 3,000 Romanian citizens and foreigners entered the country at Nadlac; some 800 vehicles crossed into Hungary. It also stated that the Border Police had tripled the number of personnel involved in border control at the Nadlac II border crossing to help with the sharp rise in traffic.
But despite ten lanes being open and the additional personnel, the wait time to cross the border was over 180 minutes, according to the online monitoring app for wait times on the Border Police website.
