The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) will submit a draft bill in the parliament next week, which would require that mayors and local representatives be elected – as the presidents – for five years, instead of the present four-year cycle – Hunor Kelemen, president of RMDSZ, stated to RFI. The law would be put into force with the upcoming local elections.
According to Kelemen, the last 30 years have demonstrated that it is not right to have the local and the parliamentary elections in the same year because this complicates things too much. The president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania believes that there is a need for administrative reform. Kelemen also stated that with this change, the dependence of investments, local programs and economic and social cooperations on national politics would not be to the extent that they are now.
