Romanian President Klaus Iohannis signed the law passed by Parliament on November 7 about the construction of a motorway linking Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș in central Transylvania with Iași in Moldova. The A8 motorway, also dubbed the “Motorway of unification” will be 320 kilometers long and will cost and estimated EUR 9 billion ($10.2 billion). The announcement was made just two days before Romania celebrates the centenary its unification with Transylvania on December 1.
Highway infrastructure development is one of the areas in which Romania has a serious handicap compared with its regional peers. According to the latest available, 2016 data from Eurostat, Romania has a total 747 kilometers of motorways while neighboring Hungary, whose territory is two and a half time smaller, has 1,924 kilometers.
