40-carriage illegal wood train caught by Romanian police

Romanian police seized a 40-carriage train with its illegal wood cargo, heading towards Kovászna/Covasna County on the 22nd of August.

The 40-carriage freight train  was stopped by police at the railway station of Tövis/Teiuș in Fehér/Alba County who established that the 1,600 cubic meter wood was being transported without valid papers and legal authorization. The cargo was therefore seized by the police, authorities announced.  A Saturday press release of the police states that the train came from Slovakia and according to its waybill the carriages should have been unloaded earlier in Alvinc/Vințu de Jos in Fehér County. But this didn’t happen: instead, the train continued its journey towards Kovászna/Covasna County without any valid papers.

The police seized the cargo, and started the investigation together with Forest Protection Authorities of Fehér County. Further inspections are being carried out as well.

Illegal logging is a serious problem in Romania, with NGOs and environmentalist groups putting up a fight to stop it. We covered one such story here.
