20-year-old driver hit with Romania’s highest ever fine for a traffic violation

A 20-year-old driver from the town of Siret (Szeretvásár in Hungarian) in Suceava County (close to the Ukrainian border) was chased by police for 70 kilometers. Later, after being caught, he was rewarded by the authorities with the highest ever fine for breaking a traffic law in the history of Romania — RON 20,808 (EUR 4,270).

First, we thought he must have been drunk, and this is why he tried to escape so desperately. But driving under the influence was not one of the 16 violations he was charged with, including speeding well over 100 km/h in an urban area.

The driver of the BMW 320D car was noticed by police in a village close to Suceava on the night of September 1, which was not so difficult because he basically provoked them by crossing the center line and passing the police car while also significantly exceeding the authorized speed limit. This is when the circa 70-kilometer-long car chase began. The young driver tried to get away in the backstreets of Suceava while breaking traffic laws over and over again. He even lost control of his car twice and almost caused an accident.

When a second police car blocked his way, the runaway driver started backing up and crashed into the police car chasing him. But the chase was still not over at this point, as he got away yet again. Not much later, the BMW drifted off the road in a curve and stopped; the driver then got out of the car and tried to run away, but was caught.

At first, the police officers assumed that he was drunk and this was why he tried so hard to escape, but the breathalyzer did not show any evidence of alcohol consumption. As a result of the chase, besides receiving a record-breaking fine, the 20-year-old also lost his driver’s license until 2024. (foter.ro)
