Golden Cock in Marosvásárhely goes into renovation

The famous Golden Cock of Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș will finally be renovated after more than a decade of disrepair. Built by Jewish industrialist Albert Bürger in 1897in Neo-Baroque style, it remained the family’s residence until nationalized by the Communist state in 1949. It was used as a warehouse until 1972, when a state chicken farm, Avicola bought it. It was restored and converted into a restaurant, the Golden Cock – hence the current name of the house, which was originally known as the Bürger House.

The restaurant was closed in the 1990-s, bought by a Bucharest company in the early 2000s, but was never used and fell in disrepair. It was purchased in 2015 by local real estate developer Cosmin Pop for EUR 700.000 ($794,000) and his company, Romur SA recently announced on its Facebook page that after almost three years of planning and obtaining the relevant permits – the house is a registered monument – it will be reconstructed at a cost of EUR 1.5 million.
